It turned into a race war and people were defending him because of the hundreds of black men who'd been convicted of crimes they didn't do while whites had gotten out of convictions many times for crimes they did (like George Zimmerman).

American Idol singles were the best sellers 2002, 2003, and 2004 (would've been 2005 too if digital didn't take off).
Other singles were only selling 100K~ at most. Usher didn't even bother releasing his single for sale like most hits then.
