It's a harsh reality - it's all about marketing and advertising. You wouldn't put a photo of a badly presented dish in an advertisement. Aesthetics

This actually happened when me and my sister, who wears a hijab, wanted to dine at a Uzbekistani/Turkish restaurant in NYC. They told us they had no seats and that we'd have to wait 15-20 minutes for our table. We decided to wait outside, and I had to use the bathroom, so I go in and there's so many empty tables, and I'm just like The waiter catches me and is like oh you guys can be seated now... I rolled my eyes and left. Disgusting practice.

on my first day he told me if any of my friends came in to eat that I should give them a table next to the kitchen at the back and i thought he literally meant my friends from school. But then the next day a black family (there were a few of them and they must have been like in their 40s?) and i gave them a table next to the window because they asked for it, and when he saw he tutted at me and was like 'what did i tell you about your friends?'

and then later he told me that only people who booked a table in advance could sit at the window and i asked all the other waiters (all white) and they said he'd never said anything about it to them
