Star Wars IS A FUN FILM,nothing else, to begin with the fact that it is basically a REMAKE of A New Hope and it ALSO borrows from Empire Strikes Back & Return of The Jedi, it is filled with plot holes, cheap "movie-isms" and rushed scenes.

I'm ALL IN for the academy to start taking genre films way more seriously BUT it takes good quality films to make that happen,Mad Max is a great film & The Martian is a great movie too.

The Academy has also shown some love in recent years for films like District 9, Avatar, Inception, Gravity...
Which weren't "normal" choices for the academy BUT they were good enough to be considered.

The Force Awakens doesn't meet this requirement IMO, and if they DO nominate it it will be only because of nostalgia & box office success(and don't bring the critics, many blockbusters have had top critic aproval but have not been nominated for Best Pic)

Even if it's category fraud, I hope Alicia and Rooney get nominated in Best Supporting Actress so that Charlotte Rampling can be nominated for Best Actress. I actually can't see any clear frontrunners this year. So curious to see

I seen "The Revenant", "The Martian", and "Danish Girl" over the holidays.

I must say, Eddie was good..his mannerisms and that mirror scene was really good. Although I think his co-star stole the movie. Alicia was great.

I liked the Martian, but Matt Damon's performance wasn't anything to write home about..And I hated Jeff Daniels character.

I fell asleep on "The Revenant"(have to watch it again ), but it's Leo's Oscar to lose..his performance was physically demanding and I couldn't imagine doing half the things he did..it's obvious he wants the Oscar..and they should just give it to him..he's on everyone lips and the nominations to back it up. Tom Hardy was great too.

This year has been all over the place and nearly every category is fluid, so IMO it would be great and fitting if films like Mad Max, Star Wars, Inside Out and maybe Anomalisa get into Best Picture. Nothing of the usual Oscar shtick seems really exciting this year so why not? Mad Max even deserves to win BP.

Spotlight surprisingly misses with the editors' guild.

People are thinking maybe The Big Short could take it. Pretty strong reviews, more of a Starry cast (with Bale and Carell plausible nominees), and stronger box office. And it's also about an Important Subject.

A minus is the director's filmography: Anchormans, The Other Guys, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights. People who don't like bro-y comedies could vote against him as a result.
And the director hasn't gotten major critical attention, and missed noms with both BFCA and Globes...so maybe not? Super divided year.

Maybe this could be another year of Best Director being different than BP. I'd definitely give BP to Spotlight though.

Spotlight is going to win BP. Even though it missed with the editors, it still has it in the bag. The Big Short I think will get nominated for BP, Adapted Screenplay, Editing & Best Supporting Actor for Christian Bale. That's probably it. I don't see it winning any personally.

The Editor's Guild doesn't mean much

If Argo could win WITHOUT a Director's nom, then any film can win best picture without an specific major field nom

I don't see Mad Max getting a nom for Best Picture..

Another movie that was great that deserves some recognition is Dope.

Mad Max only deserves the Art Direction and Adapted Screenplay Oscars, and no more. Not even a nom on Best Picture, but it would be cute to see it there.

The Martian, on the other hand, deserves nothing. The movie is overrated to the pits of hell, but it will get all the noms (and probably no wins) just because is the most American film from the possible nominees.

Both Mad Max &The Martian are mostly visually driven movies.

I think Mad Max WILL get in the Best Picture category
