I remember when Obama was in Kenya last year, in one speech he tried to defend Kenya's lgbt community and nudge people to be more tolerant. I actually applaud him for that.
But it wasn't well received. That is sad, but they did make the valid point of simple day to day survival being a much more important issue; surviving economic hardship and terrorists threats on a daily.
It's definitely a difficult topic. A lot of us westerners think "Well maybe if they didn't oppression different factions of their population, they could be more prosperous, or at least appear more attractive to tourists" (since because of cruel economic effects of colonialism, tourism is the main industry in a lot of these places). But we're out of touch in some ways.
This topic raises the question of what customs and traditions are more attractive and least stippling. Like we think a lot of Islamic nations lose out because they deny their women so many basic rights. They could have a woman perfect cold fusion, or cure cancer. But they stipple women so much, that may never be. Or I know I feel sorry for young men in a lot different cultures. There is one somewhere, where the right of passage for a boy to become a man is sticking his hand thousands of ants.
