Yeah Anecdotes is my favorite from Divers too. I'm still liking Divers a lot but I feel it'll lose its charm kinda quickly, at least in comparison to her previous albums.
And then on the Flo topic again I actually would say Ceremonials is my favorite from her but objectively Lungs is her best. At least imo. I totally get why people don't like Ceremonials though

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
Joanna ugh, it was a struggle to listen to whatever album that we did for that rate, but it wasn't bad. Maybe I'll find some time to listen to this one.

Honestly, now that I post this, the rest of top 3 for both lists is probably, like, the most obvious thing ever. However, the #1 might be a biT surprising...

3. Björk - Black Lake
You fear my limitless emotions
I am bored of your apocalyptic obsessions
Whew, lord, I spent literally hours thinking whether I should put here this or Stonemilker. Both are fairly masterpieces and amongst Björk's greatest work to date. And with her creating some many breah-taking pieces of art, it's really not easy to achieve. So why Black Lake? Because it's, you know, something you can create only once in a lifetime. Stonemilker is flawless but at the same time it somehow feels like a Jóga or Hyperballad relative. Black Lake is completely new Björk. It's the artist at her purest, rawest and possibly most emotional. The lyrics are pretty straightforward and absolutely thrilling. You can almost feel the pain yourself. On the other hand, the song lasts for over 10 minutes, but never bores the listener, even in the slightest. It's not really complex in terms of music or production but the amazing drum 'n' bass breakdown in the middle is a perfect example of how to keep things exciting.

| 3. Marilyn Manson - The Pale Emperor
Eh, Divers and The Pale Emperor are in fact equal for me, I really can't choose which one I love more. So why am I putting Manson higher? Well, Joanna has had only great records to date while The Pale Emperor is the album Marilyn should've released in 2003, after Holy Wood. It's the long overdue comeback of the Artist, so I just had to give him the edge.
The Pale Emperor shows us the real Manson. On his last few releases he has been playing various roles, to a more or less satisfying effect, here he is simply himself. He also changed the way of working a bit, saying that he no longer dresses feelings in characters and extended metaphors, instead he lets melody lead. And he won. While the lyrics are much less sophisticated than before, they hit just as hard; and when it comes to the melodies, Tyler Bates, the composer, really did a great job. With James Morrison and Muddy Waters being his main influences, he created a bluesy album full of cinematic, climatic and addictive tracks. They're a bit dark, some of them are moody but they're all really beautiful. It's a real emotional and thrilling journey through Manson's mind which appears not to be as horrific as y'all thought. |

So, I'm a huge nerd and don't really like to listen to singles separate from albums until I have actually heard the album in full, so I am waiting to listen to Joanna. But I liked Have One On Me after I got into her for eevee's rate. Listening to her will be one of my New Year's Goals.
I did begin to get into Marilyn Manson this year though so I will continue to play him because I liked his album.
You made the right call with Black Lake It's so crazy to me how Bjork has been around for such a long time and is still releasing music that can rank up there with her very best Black Lake punches me in the gut every time I listen to it.

Interesting, as it was more of an opposite case for me, I really liked Divers but wasn't fully sold on Sapokanikan at first. I love the song now though.

It's weird, she has all the elements that would make me like her, but she's kinda just an artist that's there for me.
Excited to see your top 3!

Well, these two are objectively her best albums, and I personally prefer HOOM too, so sleigh

Yeah, I'll need to come back to it in a few months to see if I like it as much as I do now.
Ceremonials used to be my fave too, but now it's probably her only album I prefer to listen to just a few tracks, the standouts, rather than sit through the entire thing. And yas @ Lungs, I mean, the singles run alone

HOOM is a terrible place to start with Joanna Divers is her most accessible album, as there are only two songs lasting longer than 6 minutes, and they actually feel more like... actual, traditional songs? Some of the HOOM tracks have a more open composition.

I honestly thought I was over him, as I loathe EMDM, don't like THEOL v much, and Grotesque and Born Villain are decent/good, I suppose, but nowhere near his older masterpieces. But the new album really reminded me how great he really is.

Stan for Manson! Wow, his fanbase on ATRL is, like, 3 people now, 2 more than I ever hoped for
Black Lake (and Bjork in general!) is such a gift from the gods

2. Kendrick Lamar - The Blacker the Berry
You sabotage my community, makin' a killin'
You made me a killer, emancipation of a real nígga
This is problematic. Like, I'm sitting here listening to it, thinking what to write about it and ??? It just feels like there aren't any words strong enough to actually describe this masterpiece. Of course, I could focus on the absolutely thrilling and breath-taking lyrics which deal with race discrimination, stereotypes, violence or hypocrisy, in a really straight-forward, yet hard-hitting and touching way. I could praise Kendrick's flow and delivery. You can tell The Blacker the Berry is a really important track for him, as he provides some authentic emotion. The mood changes as if it was a kaleidoscope, for one second it's incredibly aggressive, and just a moment later it turns out to be sadder than angry, it carries some kind of a hopelessness feeling, yet the ending suggests there's still hope, a real light in the tunnel. The melody/production do not stand out as the best on the album, but they're still fantastic and help to create an unforgettable dark and maybe even a bit dangerous atmosphere. The jazz samples are of course on point as well, and I'd say that Assassin's vocals might be a bit shrill, but it reallt works in the track's favour. Right, so many advantages, however, I still feel like all I've written doesn't cover even 10% of the song's uniqueness.

| 2. Björk - Vulnicura
Finally, you're here. It took you several years, a short collaboration with Timbaland which must've caused you a temporarily hearing impairment, creating a non-musical app, you've also been through a breakup, it must've hurt you but finally, you're here. Stronger and better than ever.
Well, that was of course an exaggeration, Vulnicura isn't as good as Homogenic, Medúlla or Vespertine, but I was honestly shocked when I first heard it. After her second soundtrack, Volta and that thing released alongside the apps I thought her glory days had been long gone and she would never again release anything good, let alone anything amazing. Vulnicura proved me wrong. It works perfectly as reverse Vespertine experience, if you wish, describing Björk's breakup and more precisely, her feelings during that. Alongside Medúlla, it's definitely her most raw record - the strings and the drum'n'bass beats appearing here and there are only a subtle background to Björk's vocal performances. In spite of them being really non-traditional and hard-to-get-into, they're really emotive and heartfelt. The lyrics are very simple compared to her previous efforts, but it's possibly the reason why they are so relatable. And to top it all, the production is outstanding. Organic, modest but outstanding. I'm also really happy Björk was consequent with realization her vision. That made Vulnicura so consistent and cohesive, even if the most exciting moment on the album, the second half of Family, was not produced by her (The Haxan Cloak, hands down!). |
I'm finishing the write-up for my #1, I'll reveal both #1's later. Anyway, I'd like to thank everybody who commented on it, I really appreciate it and thought it would be a much bigger flop, 16 pages is really more than I wanted. I'd also like to wish you a happy New Year and lots of amazing music in 2k16

He also co-wrote one other song but I think our fanbase doesn't talk about that.
On the other hand, I'm really feeling Biophilia today? I don't think this has ever happened before.

Proud to announce the winner...

1. Nightwish - The Greatest Show on Earth
Call me biased, I probably am. I mean, yeah, Nightwish is my favourite band ever, and even with their weaker albums, like this year's Endless Forms Most Beautiful, they still manage to bring at least masterpiece. The Greatest Show on Earth for sure is one, as even the harshest fans, who haven't liked any song of theirs since 2005, admit it knocks.
Why is it my #1 favourite track of 2015? It's just so crazy. It works on so many levels, even if you think it shouldn't. It's definitely the most complex and sophisticated composition I've heard in the entire 2015, and probably one of them I've ever heard. There is just so much going on, from the cinematic and climatic intro, the operatic vocals and Richard Dawkins' monologue, through the aggressive part Life and the thrilling animal sounds, to the absolute breathtaking part around the 14th minute which is something like the evolution of music. It features various instruments, there is a little medieval touch to it, an electric guitar riff sampled from Metallica's Enter Sandman, and even a few seconds of techno beat. All of it leads to the satisfactory, bombastic ending which is not only a relaxing closing part, but also, with the quotation of Charles Darwin, makes you think of how happy we are to even exist amongst all the people who will never even get a chance to.
Lyrically, it's quite frankly masterpiece. The entire album was meant to be a tribute to science, but The Greatest Show on Earth takes the topic of evolution to a brand new level. The story begins 4.6 billion years ago when the Earth was created, then it takes us to the beginnings of life, not the human ones of course (did you even know what LUCA is?). My favourite part of the entire song, lyrically, sonically and vocally, is the middle section called The Toolmaker. Human beings became fully aware, and are as wise as ever, take whichever they want from life and do whatever they want. The melody follows, as it gets more aggressive, harder and maybe a bit darker. The polyphonic is also something jaw-dropping, especially the repeated We are here always gives me chills.
In the composition, every member of the band gets their own chance to shine. Personally, my favourite instrumental part would be the pipes at the beginning. It's amazing as Troy Donockley's play was mostly used to contrast the rest of the track before, here it follows the natural progression. Not to discredit the rest of the band, the guitars, drums or piano are just as stunning, and Floor gives us the most interesting and most passionate vocal performance on the entire record. But even then, the track is stronger as a sum of all its parts, of all the five sections. It's a testament to Tuomas Holopainen's insane talent and also the reason why they're my favourite band ever. |
