Well anyway, small update tonight all in one before I go to bed. I'll try to reply to other peoples Best Ofs tomorrow but mobile ATRL is a pain in the ass and always redirects me to ads.
is for... Not something I'd call myself but it's what I'd call you guys.
The number of musicians starting with the letter N is 3!
Why: Can we please stop comparing Nao to FKA? The only thing they have in common is that they both released an EP. I find it very offensive to Nao.
I realize that this may be an odd choice out of all songs from the EP, but I think the discordant "wahwahs" that carry the song alongside Nao's sweet voice and the drums/bass in the background, it's just makes for a really intriguing song. The chorus in particular is cool, probably because of Nao's voice mostly.
Check Out: Do yourself a favor and check out all of February 15!
Avoid: None
Natalie Prass
“Where do you go when the only home that you know is with a stranger?”
Song: Bird of Prey by Natalie Prass
Why: I won't lie, I still have only listened to this album twice and this is the only song that's stuck with me still. Sweet voice, great song arrangements, great use of subdued horns and instruments, very classy song. I really need to give the whole album another chance.
Check Out: Sry can't really say. Bird of Prey actually was good.
Avoid: Idk
Neon Indian
“Shaking our pockets loose... hey, what's the use?”
Song: Slumlord by Neon Indian
Why: There's songs on Neon Indian's new album like Annie and 61 Cygni Ave (this song to me is just a more chaotic/acid version of Annie) that take a tropical, breezy, and spring break-ready approach to songs, that sound amazing. There's songs like Techno Clique that sound like old Robyn interludes (Don't ****ing Tell Me What To Do), that sound amazing. There's sexy, midnight drive on the freeway songs like The Glitzy Hive, that sound amazing.
And then there's Slumlord. It pretty much falls in the center of the album, which is where the album usually takes either a soft dip or nose dive in quality. Not Neon Indian's new album. Slumlord is the pivotal song from the album that really encompasses his new shift in direction.
From the slow, warbling synths in the intro, you think "eh this song will be okay." They start to pick up the pace a bit and the beat truly kicks in, as does some Daft Punk-esque robot voice run rampant. You'd like "oh okay." Then the piano kicker comes in and it's like... ****. This is the song. This is the one. The rest of the song carries on with him singing on it and more ups and downs, but lets be real, this is the best song from the album and maybe his best song yet.
Check Out: Well outside of the ones I already mention, Dear Skorpio Magazine is actually my 2nd favorite. I like that it weaves in and out of the tropical, beach sounds and glitchy night-club jams.
Avoid: Unfortunately, for a song called Smut!, I actually didn't like the song much. Still upsets me to this day.
Zillionaire is my fave from her as well, slaying with your picks as usual.
Same with Bird of Prey. Her album is good but its just not one that's on constant rotation for me.
I think maybe Deadbeat Summer is still my boo's magnum opus? Or maybe it's Slumlord. Maybe Slumlord + Release > Deadbeat Summer > Slumlord by itself?
"Can we please stop comparing Nao to FKA?"
We don't compare luv, it's just a friendly competition. They're the Bey and Rih to the game
That's fair (Nao/Bey) but that's kinda insulting to Rih don't you think and I'm not even a huge Riri fan :/
SO I will be out of town until Saturday, and this will be my last post on my thread until 2016 and we'll wrap up then! Thank you all again so much for commenting and checking out my Best Of!
is for... Obvious labels.
The number of musicians starting with the letter O is 0!
So recommend me some shiz! TRF recommended me that one guy who produced Autre's debut and I liked the two songs for sure, but I haven't had enough time to enjoy the music to put it on my year end. So more recommendations pls!
You should get into the rest of OPN's Garden of Delete album! It's really one of my favourite albums of the year (*hint hint* ), although it is really experimental, so I'd kinda understand if you didn't like it. I don't really understand the random hate for critically acclaimed, successful legend FKA twigs.
is for... Not something I'd call myself but it's what I'd call you guys.
You did not
I understand the problem you had with Natalie, it's kind of hard to pick some standouts or even differentiate the tracks at first. Bird of Prey is one of the best though, along with My Baby Don't Understand Me which you linked to in your post
I'm gonna check out OPN's full album tomorrow (I liked the two songs I checked out), and I'll check out the other few rec's here too. I always make that title of song/musician thing confused too, lovesong.
Hope you all had a great new year's! I just got home recently so I'll update and then see what I've missed from other Best Ofs. Yay.
is for... Parents when you move home
The number of musicians starting with the letter P is 6!
“Stay there while I move, stay scared while I improve.”
Song: Crosswords by Panda Bear
Why: I see this on a lot of people's lists already so I don't really feel the need to explain it. It's an acid, kinda trippy song that somehow manages to be slick and mellow. I also really like the lyric that I included. I appreciate Panda Bear + need to check out more Animal Collective albums.
Check Out: Tropic of Cancer and Come to Your Senses
Avoid: Boys Latin kinda creeps me out
Passion Pit
“1985 was a good year, the sky broke apart then you appeared.”
Song: Lifted Up (1985) by Passion Pit
Why: Passion Pit's album this year was extremely disappointing. It does have a few decent songs, but overall it wasn't a great album. However, the first song from the album, Lifted Up, was the best. I feel like most of Passion Pit's greatest songs are filled with big, loud choruses and are generally upbeat, and this song fits the bill.
Another thing about Passion Pit's music that was always interesting was the clash of upbeat and almost charming music versus the desolate and painful lyrics. This song feels actually positive, and an ode to his then-wife. I will say even though the music this year wasn't great, Michael seems to be in a better place and a much happier guy which is really good.
Check Out: Where the Sky Hangs was another song I was tempted to pick over this one.
Avoid: The rest of the album but if I had to pick one song, the Ten Feet Tall song is horrible.
The PB Underground
“I don't wanna be your part time lover.”
Song: Part Time Lover (feat. Brendan Reilly) by The PB Underground
Why: I just know this song because of Brendan being on it lol. I really love the instruments on it though too. Great use of horns alongside the funky beat. Brendan's voice is always spectacular and I love him always singing these "we should be more than a one-night stand" songs. Not sure how I feel about the random rapper, but I don't dislike it I guess!
Check Out: I still need to listen to the whole album but I know Brendan's on another one called Which One to Choose, which is good.
Avoid: I'll check out the full album and let you know
Crosswords is legit a trippy experience in a good way. I love that song now. Boys Like Latin doesn't necessarily creep me out. It has a cool video too.
