I agree with your first part, but in what regard to do you feel that the USA and Canada are growing apart culturally?

Well, ever since Canada's refusal to aid the US in the Iraq War, I would say that Canada no longer looks to the US for approval and certainly no longer feel obligated to answer to requests from the US. In addition, anti-Americanism in Canada is higher than it has ever been. As Canada views the EU as an important partner now and seeks an exclusive economic deal with the EU, it's clear that Canada wants to move away from dependence on the US. The US further alienated Canada with its Buy American clause. I'm not sure if that went into effect, but it certainly made an impression upon Canadians and the government.
Of course, that's a description of the political reality. But culture reflects sociopolitical trends. So, although it's not very obvious now, the effect of American culture on Canadian culture has been eclipsed, assuming that the current anti-Americanism and push for closer ties with the EU in Canada continues. People will probably always view Canada as most similar to the US, but I believe that similarity has already peaked.
(Obviously I'm talking about English Canada, Quebec will always be very unique)
Anyways,
