Sirisena criticized concert promoters for allowing alcohol to be served and giving women the chance to kiss Mr. Iglesias on stage, saying it went against the traditions of the predominantly Buddhist nation.

The president made his pointed remarks at a public meeting days after Mr. Iglesias performed to a packed audience in Colombo, the Spanish-born singer’s only Asian stop on his “Love and Sex” world tour.

The president came under fire on social media as many reposted a photo of Sirisena’s son-in-law attending the concert, while others pointed out that Sri Lanka is one of the biggest exporters of lingerie for international brands such as Victoria’s Secret. Many took the president to task with the hashtag #BrasForSriLanka.

Other Sri Lankan politicians scoffed at Sirisena's underwear crusade.

"On the bra matter let's keep politics out of it," Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Harsha de Silva wrote on Facebook Monday. "We got bigger things to worry about."

Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, etc. are South Asian countries where Hindu Buddhist culture originates from. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mauritius too, but they were mostly converted by Muslim invaders.
