Why? I enjoy the Star Wars films, not a big fan though. Why is this line and part of the franchise so iconic? Just seems like a regular storyline from a soap opera but with added sci-fi.
Because at the time it was literally a shocker and the line caught on. I mean not everyday you find out that your father is second in command of the evilest force the galaxy ever known.

At the time people had no context to the story at all. It was indeed quite a shock to people - even more so considering how popular and iconic the franchise already was. A lot of fans were blindsided.
