American Life is far worse, and one of her worst records. Music is most definitely underrated (though I would say Bedtime Stories is moreso).

Music is peddled by her stans to be the New Testament to Ray of Light and it's simply not true. American Life took what Music did and refined it, and is unfairly discredited because of its pointed message and its relative lack of success. I don't buy into bull crap.

Because the Above & Beyond remix overshadowed the hell out of it. The album version is kind of a snooze by comparison.

One of her best albums. I paid dust to Music for so long, but when I discovered it, it slayed me.

It's a shame it usually gets overshadowed by Ray of Light when people talk about Madonna's discography. I think it's amazing how many different sounds it explores with just 10 tracks, yet still makes the impression of a cohesive work.

It's not better than Bedtime Stories and definitely not better than Ray or Light, True Blue or Confessions but it was a solid album. I love her versatility on it and the singles were great

It's not her best album but it is good. It's just kind of there. The cowboy reinvention is a little weak. But I do enjoy it a lot. However, even HC and RH are better I think.

AL is definitely not... Refined... That's just not how I would describe it. If anything, it's coarse and harsh and jarring. Which is why I appreciate it so much. Like Erotica, it stands out like a sore thumb in her discography. It's fun, stupid, unpredictable, inconsistent and necessary.

I completely agree. Music is a little too MOR to be top five discog for me. HC is lower quality but leaves an impression.

I mean refined as in it really takes what I feel like Music tried to do and gets it right. It's very much a continuation of the concepts Music introduced, but I do agree that in overall sound and style it's a lot more rough.

I really do love it; it's my go-to album when I just want to think and fall into the lyrics and sounds, because even with some of the more pointed songs it contains some of her most introspective material.
