Let's take a moment, as we're awaiting for her new album, to appreciate Gaga's creativity and ingenious projects and the whole effort put in the ARTPOP PROJECT.
The ARTPOP PROJECT was filled with amazing ideas and collaborations with really talented minds which came together to create a never-seen before pop culture movement.
1. VOLANTIS
The beta version of this vehicle which Gaga used as a metaphor to describe her will to encourage young artists to stand up for their work and talent, was shown during the release party of the record - 11 November 2013.
Being in an early stage of production, most people rushed to judge its performance and express their disappointment in it, but nobody focused on the amazing idea behind it.
In collaboration with the Techaus, they wanted to continue developing the idea of the flying dress and eventually use it in her tour performances and other purposes.
2. THE ARTPOP APPLICATION
Built as an musical and visual engineering system that combined art, music, fashion and technology, the ARTPOP application was also launched on the day of the album release.
Users would have had the chance to share their own projects with other fans (including remixes created with the album's official steams using Trackstar and all sorts of GIFs and visual images created by them) and even include them in the ArtHaus Exhibition where Gaga could have seen them.
Also, using Trackstar, fans could have gone behind the scenes into the creation of the album and the production of the tour.
Using GagaTV, fans could have had submitted music videos, ideas and concepts for Gaga to use in her future visual works and watched the production behind the visual work of each song of the record as each of them would have had a music video for itself.
3. PARIS EXHIBITION - THE TRANSCENDENCE INTO THE CLASSIC WORLD OF ART
With the help of the amazing and talented Robert Wilson, they came with the idea of creating a never done before exhibition at the world's biggest museum: The Louvre.
The artworks featuring “Mademoiselle Caroline Riviere” (1806) by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, “The Death of Marat” (1793) by Jacques Louis David and “Head of the Baptist in a Silver Charger” (1507) by Andrea Solari were unveiled in Paris in November 2013.
4. THE ORIGINAL VMA ''APPLAUSE'' PERFORMANCE - THE LAUNCH OF HER NEW CREATIVE ERA
BLACK AND RED INTO BLINDING WHITE
LG begins on the center stage B below LED scoreboard, in a draped black gown. The KAWS head turns to reveal a black backdrop (ex.: silk) stretched across the truss of the head. A red torture performance possibly involving artist Ron Athey (TO BE CONFIRMED) is displayed on an incline, with mirrored, bloody glass. LG very slowly walks the catwalk to the main stage over a period of one minute and forty seconds.
At 1:40 / as LG arrives at the black silk drop, it drops kabuki style and is immediately pulled offstage to reveal a blinding white paradise garden (see reference images), filled with LG performers, possibly floating or displayed on tall pedestals (see attached looks). At the same time as the black screen drops, LG’s black dress drops to reveal the same elegant gown in white. LG begins to walk stage left across the stage in profile over the course of two minutes. As she crosses the torture figure, the dress turns red.
At 3:13, LG begins to fly diagonally up stage right in front of the white garden. The song ends as she is still ascending diagonally above the garden. At 3:36 or the end of the song, there is a black out; she is lowered and the head turns back to original position for next act. The exact timing of the walk, if her song is to be preceded by other noise/white noise etc./prior to it starting, etc. is ytd.
5. JEFF KOONS STATUE
Another amazing part of the project included the collaboration with one of the biggest artists of our age: Jeff Koons. He went on to create a massive sculpture of Gaga which will be premiered at the artRave, in the day on the album premier and even be featured as the album cover.
6. THE ARTPOP VISUALS - COLLABORATION WITH INEZ & VINOODH
The whole ARTPOP project also featured an amazing photoshoot and a short movie behind it shot by Inez and Vinoodh which were used by Gaga to express her ideas and visuals surrounding the album. in a never before seen manner
They also shot a short commercial which features Gaga telling the public to not buy her new single, a video in which Gaga tried to explore the fall of the pop star, the destructive side effects of social media on an artist's creativity and the impact of charts regarding the relevance of the pop star.
The short commercial would have gone to be aired on TV, but was later cancelled cause of the early leak and 180 degree change of the release date and promo schedule which affected the whole surprise of it.
Let's take a moment and appreciate the big project that ARTPOP was going to be and Gaga as the most talented and innovative figure in today's pop culture!
