Third place belongs to 20th Century Fox’s Joy, the third dramedy collaboration between leading actress Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. Russell. The absurdist biopic about Joy Mangano, the creator of the Miracle Mop, is currently estimated to pull in between $21.4M-$22.4M, boosted by a slew of Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations. That opening will beat the $19.1M of the duo’s previous American Hustle which legged out to $150M off a B+ CinemaScore. Joy received the same grade tonight. Fox sold Joy squarely on Lawrence in its one sheets, billboards and TV spots and it’s just further proof that the actress is one of the few stars today who can still open movies.
Meanwhile, a cache of femmes continue to flock to see her in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 which looks to raise its domestic B.O. to $266M by Sunday.
I hope this is her last movie with DOR for a while. I wished this would flop and she'd realize how mediocre he was for her but Queen's name keeps people coming
