I totally get what you say! Here's the explanation.
Actually, the noun's gender is not based on how feminine/masculine something is, it's based on how feminine/masculine the
word sounds. In spanish,the majority of words that end with
o are masculine. For example: gato, carro, jugo. On the other hand, words that end with
a are mostly feminine. For example: silla, house/casa, bag/cartera.
Edit: hence, the use of
el gato,
el carro,
el jugo.
la silla,
la casa,
la cartera.
