Am I the only one more offended by them calling her a terrorist because they thought she was Arab than the fact someone mixed up her race/heritage (which, in THEORY, should be nothing more than a harmless, easy-to-rectify/clarify mistake. And would have been too if not for the former)?

Bigots always make illogical generalizations like that (gay people have AIDS, black people are on welfare, Hispanics are illegal criminals, women can't do whatever) and it's not worth addressing because it's unreasonable. Moreover, Priyanka already addressed it in her response.

And pretending South Asians look Middle Eastern isn't harmless when statistics show that a disproportionate amount of the people who face hate crimes and harassment for being "Middle Eastern" or "Arab" aren't even from that actual region or look the part. That's not even offensive. It would be laughable if it weren't scary and dangerous.

So instead you spend four pages addressing the also illogical but FAR less harmful "Woops! Mixed up the appearances of Arabs and South Asians!" The focus should be on the primary issue here, which is the terrorist stuff. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if this wasn't an issue. No one runs a news article because someone thought Priyanka was Arab when she's actually South Asian and they were 100% cool with it either way and just didn't know.

As for the issue with mixing up races, the problem there is, gasp, they associate them with a group they hate and think are all terrorists. Back to my first point.

A better example of "should be harmless" is Ariana Grande, who tons of people apparently think is Latina even though she is 100% not Latina. It's a mix up, but nothing horrendously bad comes of it. Likewise, nothing horrendously bad would come from people mistaking Priyanka for Arab if people weren't going "Arab=Terrorist."

I'm not saying people shouldn't be corrected. They should. But mistaking her race is 100% NOT the issue here and doesn't mean the person is some horrid human being or hardcore racist. On the other hand, the "Arab people are terrorists" is a major issue. Apparently even for people who aren't Arabic. At all. As we're seeing now

Actually, the issue is that they're uneducated and genuinely thinks Indians, Pakistanis and other South Asians are "Middle Eastern." There aren't a lot of Middle Eastern people in the US so their exposure to Muslims are usually Pakistanis and in their mind Muslim = Middle Eastern. Like another poster said, they're shocked when they see actual Middle Eastern people, which is why there's 4 pages of discussion with people laughing at the idea of Priyanka being thought of as "Arab."

I already addressed why it's a something horrendously bad can come out of it and you just acknowledged it too. And yes, it's clearly an issue when incidents like Sikhs getting physically attacked after being mistaken for "Middle Eastern." It goes beyond Arabs being associate with terrorists when you're dragging other people into the issue.

Priyanka is Asian. And speaking of Italians and Latin Americans, they're more likely to pass as Middle Eastern, which goes back to the point being discussed in the thread. If these people actually were educated about what Arabs and other Middle Eastern people looked like, they'd be less likely to be bigoted because those people are similar to them. It's like in places like Greece, France and Germany where Turkish and other Middle Eastern immigrants are quite common and there's a lot of Islamophobia, but it's rare for them to get attacked because they're similar to the mainstream population.

Using the case in this thread, Priyanka is a dark-skinned South Asian so there's obviously going to be a lot more xenophobia towards her than Middle Eastern people who often pass as white or black like Dr. Oz or Hoda from the Today Show. Add that xenophobia to the ignorance about what "Middle Eastern" is and you get the situations I was describing before.

Again, the majority of the people who responded in this thread are ATRL's Arab members and they didn't bother condemning it because, again, it's a given. Where's the hypocrisy and generalizations? If you're referring to the person who claimed all Arabs can pass as white, that was corrected by multiple people. If it's the Arabs supposedly being terrorists part, that's in Priyanka's comment.
