News: Malawi drops gay sex charges after activists complain

Malawi’s justice minister Samuel Tembenu announced that it will drop all charges against two gay men who were arrested on December 7 in the capital Lilongwe, according to Nyasa Times.

Cuthbert Kulemela, 19, and Kelvin Gonani, 39, were facing a jail term of up to 14 years for allegedly having sexual intercourse inside Gonani’s home.

The men were arrested and charged despite the 2012 decision by Malawi officials to halt such arrests countrywide.

They were also reportedly subjected to ‘medical tests‘ without their consent.

Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa told the Malawi Times that the police did not arrest the suspects but were trying to protect the two from an angry mob that was stoning the house of one of the suspects.

‘We took them to our police office just for their own safety because on that day, these two people’s lives were in danger.

‘People, who surrounded the suspect’s house, could have done anything because they know [him] as one of the people who sodomize young boys. That’s why we released them two days after the arrest,’ said Gondwa.

But a bail document, a copy of which was obtained by blog 76crimes, shows an arrest was made for alleged sodomy.

Various social justice groups such as Human Rights Watch had called on Malawi to drop the charges and asked the US and UK government to put pressure on Malawi.

So why do people call them "SJWs"? I specifically recall ATRL members calling #BlackLivesMatter protesters "SJWs."

And Human Rights Watch definitely has a Tumblr. Most of their followers are "SJWs" who post, retweet and write stuff online. That's how these organizations raise awareness and get support.
