britney and usher came from the era of knowing how to actually pay homage to their faves.
They constantly name checked MJ, Madonna, JJ etc.

They took influence from the best and made it their own which is why the legends commended them.

Beyonce, Bieber, Timberlake, gaga, nicki came from the era of copy/paste pass it off as your own until you get caught and then claim you were inspired.
