Only if they got 20% or more of the total country's electorate - in this case any side that starts the referendum process needs 343,000 votes to be binding. They got those and then some.
Bummer. Same-sex marriage is coming in 5 years there anyway.

Yeah, I think in five years probably Germany/Austria/Switzerland/Slovenia/Czech Republic will get it Czech is a maybe, but they've started the process like Austria: sue for adoption first
Shame it didn't pass, hopefully next time Slovenia

Yes, Czech civil unions block anyone adopting so they are suing for ha rights
Court case, I'm a little optimistic because the old argument the government used was "the children" but now that Austria is going to let gays adopt (adoption ban dead), they can't use that point anymore. We'll have to wait and see
Heartbreaking results, let's hope the Constitutional Court alternative provides a better result.
This is proof that not only are some areas of the world not ready to grant human rights to all their citizens, but that the the resistance against the LGBT rights movement is growing stronger and tries to cover ground in this one-sided cultural war every day. That's why you see more "pro-family" marches and anti-LGBT expression/sex laws in countries where LGBT people already have it bad enough and high members of religious institutions inciting violence against LGBT humans.

omg, this is like Croatia exactly 2 years ago, only Slovenia has 3% more supportive for gay marriage. Such a shame! Former Yugoslavian countries are such a mess
A bit of good news, Moka, the 2015 marriage bill was passed because the Court told Parliament some time ago to make civil unions better and now they have filed a new partnership bill as a "band-aid" after the referendum defeat.
