2015's reigning Queen of British Pop music, Jess Glynne finally broke in to superstardom in 2015 following 2014's mega smash, Rather Be with Clean Bandit. And with it, I'm conflicted.
The singles released before the release of this LP have been pretty great (despite me not being a fan of the biggest song released, Hold My Hand ). Her voice is just such a one trick pony. Yes, it's distinctive but I feel like after listening to 2 of her songs I know what her voice can do. There are just no surprises.
Plus the whole "lets release an album full of meh ballads following multiple smashes" got old with Emeli Sande. Despite this, I would like to thank Legend Glynne for blessing us with "Home". Amazing track.
A unique debut album that doesn't stick to the "ballad, mid tempo, bop, ballad" structure. Really interesting debut.
This girl somehow managed to merge pop, modern R&B, hip hop and EDM to make a genre that is totally unique to her and but the album can get a bit grating after a full listen of the album. Plus, she tends to do this things with her voice that makes it go super high and super low in a matter of seconds while sounding like a goat. Which isn't the most pleasing? Speaking of Pleasin', what a great track on this album. The fact that it was a bonus track is an injustice.
Honestly, I'm still disappointed that EPIC was't willing to spill the coins and buy the Timbaland songs that she recorded. **** EPIC.
I feel like I am one of the only people in the world who love Meghan un-ironically. This girl really possesses a lot of talent and is so likeable. Heck, the EP proceeding this release managed to chart at #22 last year on my list.
However, I feel like this type of Doo-wop ukulele fusion that Meghan has managed to carve for herself really works. But, maybe not for a 15 track album. After a while the album just starts to drag and all the songs start to blend in to each other. The paint-by-numbers formula becomes easy to recognise after a few listens.
With a second album due next year, I am excited for what's to come. Lips Are Movin, Bang Dem Sticks, Credit, Mr. Almost, No Good For You >>
