This movie is not a sequel that takes place after the events of Alien: Resurrection but rather what happens after Prometheus. There is an actual sequel for the Alien franchise coming after this movie and is going to be directed by Neil Blomkamp and it will take place after Alien: Resurrection. We probably won't get in until 2019-2020, though.

Actually, Neil's version is ignoring Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection and is a direct sequel to Alien and Aliens. It's actually rumored that it will shift focus from Ripley to Newt as the new heroine as Ripley passes the torch just like how she views Newt as a daughter.

The Alien: Covenant trilogy is going to be based on the events of Prometheus and ultimately tying in to the first Alien film and explain what caused Ripley and her crew to travel to that planet.


It's honestly a bit of a mess. They should have just kept Prometheus the way it originally was and have the crashed ship that killed Vickers be the same ship that sent that transmission or distress signal. But nope, Ridley decided to be money hungry by changing the planet and most of the ending and basically lead us to this situation.
