The Sacramento Kings player, suspended for one game after hurling anti-gay slurs at NBA referee Bill Kennedy, realized that his initial tweet that he ‘did not mean to offend or disrespect anyone’ was not sufficient.

He now says in a statement: ‘I said that my words toward Bill Kennedy were unacceptable and did not reflect my feelings toward the LGBT community. Some have interpreted my comments as a non-apology. I want to be clear, from the bottom of my heart that I am truly sorry for what I said to Bill.

‘There is no place on or off the court for language that disrespects anyone’s sexual orientation. That is not who I am or what I believe and I will strive every day to be a better person.’

Rando had not said he was sorry in his tweet earlier in the week and had explained that ‘my actions during the game were out of frustration and emotion, period! They absolutely do not reflect my feelings toward the LGBT community.’

During a game on 3 December, Kennedy had ejected Rondo and instead of leaving the court, the four-time NBA All Star stalked the referee and reportedly shouted at him: ‘You’re a motherf–king ******…You’re a f–king ******, Billy.’

Rondo had initially denied making the comments.

The referee was gay and I think it was somewhat of an open secret in the NBA since he was "outed" back in 2010 by a sportscaster who claimed everybody knew.

i dont think he should have been suspended. communicating to him the error of his ways is a far more effective way of dealing with the situation. getting upset and shouting HOMOPHOBIA accomplishes nothing. he was just angry, he didn't intend to be homophobic.
