More than 640,000 children are urged to stay in their homes amid fears of an attack on the nation's second largest school district.
The FBI and explosive experts have been called in to sweep every campus across the 5,000-square-mile county.
Ramon Cortnies, superintendent of Los Angeles schools who made the decision to close all schools, told a press conference there were specific threats made against multiple schools and students.
'I can't take a chance, I want all schools to be searched today,' Cortines said

He said he had ordered searches on schools of all kinds - from elementary schools to adult-age college schools.
This is not the first threat made against the district but this instance is unique, he said.
However, he insisted he is acting out of 'an abundance of caution' in light of the recent attack on the neighboring city of San Bernardino.
Steve Zimmer, president of the school district board, urged: 'Parents, if you have not sent your kids to school, do not send them to schoo.
