SINGAPORE: The former employers of a Filipino domestic helper who starved for 15 months, causing her weight to drop from 49kg to 29kg, observed her every move and did not let her speak to anyone.

Testifying on the second day of the trial on Tuesday, Thelma Oyasan Gawidan, 40, who claimed she ate only instant noodles and plain bread twice a day, said she was not allowed to go out on her own and did not get any days off.

Gawidan told the court that she was allowed initially to use the toilet in Lim's condominium in the Orchard area. But, after working for few months, she was allowed to use only the public toilet next to the swimming pool.

"Although I sometimes urgently needed to use the toilet, she (Chong) would ask me to wait, and she would accompany me," she said.

In all seriousness, slavery is not dead. It will always exist, and that's that. That is really terrible and I'm so glad his evil ways were exposed.

How horrific! Hope she is now safe and happy(er), and that her health hasn't been irreversibly ruined - though I'm betting it has! How the **** could people do this to someone else? I HATE this species. If I had a button that would instantly kill anyone who has ever purposefully committed grievous harm or is harbouring evil intent to murder or destroy someone else's' life, I would press it with haste.

This is my biggest fear if I were to be a maid (which I don't plan on).

Her eating instant noodles every day, though. Poor girl. Even if that kept her very, very, slightly fed, it's still so unhealthy for her body.

That's it? Justice won't be getting served no matter the outcome of the case. 10k and maybe a month of jail in exchange for a slave? Hope the women gets compensated for the 15 months, atleast

This is awful, I hope she gets justice and her employer get the punishment they deserve. It's such a tragedy, many of them leave their country to create a better life for them and their family only for situations like this or even worse to befall on them, sometimes even their own people are the culprit.
