I listened to a few songs from the Rae Morris album after I heard Ariel Rechtshaid was involved with it. I wasn't really impressed, but I think I should give it another chance.
Lol I was as unimpressed with that Tamar album as you were ... I am a huge fan of her and her debut was a STRONG A+ album through and through but Calling All Lovers left me bored :/ definitely were some tracks though that were great though... and nothing was awful by any means
When I was browsing ATRL and I saw a thread for Allie X's song 'Catch' I ignored it. Then Katy Perry tweeted about it and I checked it out and I was interested to see how a full length LP would pan out for this artist. I decided to put this, because I feel like it is important to count the minimal amounts of time when Katy does something good.
Sadly, we did not receive that LP. Instead, Allie has decided to release small EPs throughout her career under the 'CollXtion' branding.
This is a strong EP with great pop songs on it. I just can't get over her voice which comes across as too strong if that makes sense. However, this issue seems to have been solved if the UK bonus track 'Never Enough' is to go by. Stellar song.
So many resources have gone in to this girl and she STILL has yet to crack the upper half of the Hot 100. And, if the album is anything to go by, I can see why.
She has a great voice, but that's not enough in 2015. Most of this material on this album is simply bland. If it wasn't for the grand 'Expensive', 'Nobody Love', 'Should Have Been Us' and a few more this album would be a slog.
This girl needs to find a sound, as at the moment she is lost. She wants to be like Xtina without the sex appeal? Or like Alanis without the songwriting abilities? Or Beyoncé without...the Beyoncé? I'm confused.
In a year where everybody turned their back on Natalia Kills (or Teddy Sinclair or whatever the **** her new name is), Cherrytree Records had to find a new female to excite the gays. And honestly, I think Ivy does a pretty good job at that.
She reminds of Jessie J mixed with Christina Aguilera except she doesn't feel the need to randomly wail random notes 3/4 throughout the song. Plus, she has this nice little rock edge highlighted by the Sting collaboration mixed with this modern R&B feel that makes anyone if not slightly cooler.
Songs like 'Biscuit', 'The Dame Says' and 'Champagne Taste' are ****ing great songs.
In a post Little Mix world, the stakes are higher. And, this album just doesn't quite do it.
This album is basically that one white girl that listens to urban music, talks about "how much the miss the 90's" yet they were born in 1998 and use LOL and ROFL outloud unironically.
Songs like 'We Know', 'Going Nowhere', 'Reflection', 'Sledgehammer' and 'Worth It' are pretty good pop songs. Easy listening and fun with some great harmonies which is all I want from a girl group.
However, all the rest of the songs are straight rip offs of other songs (This Is How We Roll is literally the Black Eyed Peas' Dirty Bit) or super embarassing (do ma ass look fat? or nah?).
I feel sorry for this girl. The significantly less talented Dami Im released her album less than a year after her X Factor win, yet Sam waited nearly 3 years to release her debut after multiple delays and a whole album being scrapped.
Never fear, Sam is our new Queen of Pop. Imagine Kylie Minogue with a dash of Mariah and Ariana in there. She is literally the artist of my dreams. When she sticks to this she is great. 'Show Me Love', 'Shake That' and 'Always' are super good sexy pop songs.
There just seems to be quite a bit of filler for a relatively short album. But given her **** label, I forgive you queen.
