Like, we get it, we hate John Key. But I think it's a bit silly to let that hatred spoil you from having your own opinion on the flag (especially if you would have voted for an alternative).

Hasn't he done a lot of good for NZ, though? Why do they people him? As far as I was aware, NZ is quite socially progressive, the economy is doing pretty well and there are fewer Kiwis leaving for Australia than in a long time...?

Yeah, he's decent. The Key haters are far more vocal than anyone who supports him. But the numbers speak for themselves, Key will continue to be reelected (although, imo, we need someone new next election). A lot of the people who hate him don't even vote - and they're the last ones who should be complaining

Key haters tend to be extremely vocal people.

Plus when you've had 9 years as Prime Minister, you're going to get haters regardless of what you do. In all honesty, he has been pretty good for New Zealand (though people can definitely disagree with that in regards to his lack of action on child poverty and climate change). It depends what you want to prioritise, I guess.
