There's another artist that I'm super high on like I was Royal Blood last year. I can't wait to introduce them to you.

Was that me? Because it may not have been me...as far as I can tell, anyway. My memory has gone bad in my old age...

No, seriously, it really needs to be established just how much more work I put in early this year compared to past years. I mean, I don't think I've EVER been this prepared for a YECA before. If I can't finish it this year, there's really no hope for me.

You stole all of my ambition. This year I'm the one barely REDy for this.

Anyone else getting some Freaky Friday vibes?
Okay, I just have to get the old layout out of retirement for the YouTube list and get all of that sorted before posting that list, but it should be up soon...as in, "an hour or so" soon. I'm so excited, and no, I just can't hide it.

The YECA: Top 10 YouTube Videos of 2015
Okay, getting straight to the point...let's get it started with the YouTube list!
| HE DON'T HAVE TO DO IT WITH HIS OWN MONEY ANYMORE!
One kind of video that I've always loved is the kind of video where people who work hard are rewarded for their hard work. It helps when the reward is a surprise. That's the case with the video kicking off this top 10. Nicholas Lacy, a defensive back for North Carolina State's football team, walked on and worked so hard that he was given a scholarship for his efforts. My favorite part, however, has to be the coach talking, George Barlow. Football coaches are supposed to be these tough guys who know how to motivate, and Barlow definitely seems to have both traits. But watch what happens when he reveals that Lacy has earned a scholarship. He's perhaps the happiest guy in the entire room, and he's in a room with a bunch of happy football players. It's so joyous that it has to make this list. |
|
| Psychochristmas
The guy who came up with the Christmas lights in this video, "Sleigher Bob", is a metalhead of the highest order, and it shows with his lights videos that he uploads (almost) every year. In the past, he's done videos for Slayer (naturally), Machinehead, Metallica, Kittie, and Pantera. This year, he put up a twofer. The vid showcasing his lightshow for Disturbed's "Stricken" is also fun, but I've decided to focus on his lightshow for Slipknot's "Psychosocial". It really highlights just how much work Bob has put into his lightshows. I love coming back to watch this video, because there's always something new that I love. This time, it was the tree acting as a platform for the guitar solo. Glorious. |
|
| Barack Obama Performs "Can't Feel My Face"
"baracksdubs" has been doing videos of Obama "singing" current hits for a while now, but this year was a particularly great year for his dubs. His "Uptown Funk" dub is on point, and the "Thriller" dub never fails to make me smile. But his magnum opus may be his "Can't Feel My Face" dub. The work "baracksdubs" puts into the dubs is just wonderful to watch...and even to listen to. Seriously, perhaps the best part about these dubs is how catchy they are and how much they capture the spirit of the songs themselves. |
|
| Uptown Funk Gave It To Him
This guy...THIS GUY. This is basically the guy that I've always wanted to be. This is a guy that does not care whatsoever about what people think about him, a guy that just wants to have the most fun possible listening to one of the most fun songs possible. It's joyous to watch someone have this much fun in public. When the Uptown Funk gives it to the guy, it's hard not to appreciate just how much it takes over his spirit and turns him into a dancing machine. My favorite part is probably the bearded guy that appears late and seemingly offers an ice cream cone to cool him off...but THE UPTOWN FUNK DANCER IS HAVING NONE OF IT. He'll stop when the song is over, dammit. |
|
| Why Wrestling Fans Hate Wrestling
The state of wrestling in 2015 is...not very pretty. Ratings for WWE TV are tanking in a way that hasn't been seen in quite some time, and the creative direction that the company is taking is anything but creative. This video is a perfect showcase of just how annoying wrestling (or, at the very least, WWE) is at present time. It takes us through two different perspectives: The arrogant jerk that spouts off cliches like "It's so fake!" and "The endings are predetermined, so why would anyone watch it?!", and a wrestling fan who is absolutely fed up with the direction WWE/wrestling is heading down. The ending line is the clincher. I won't spoil it, but it really drives the point home. |
|
| Fred Seinfeld
I can't believe that I never knew how much I wanted this mashup...and it's so painfully simple that it annoys me that I didn't want it sooner! Take the Seinfeld theme, throw in some Fred Durst...and WHAM. INSTANT SUCCESS. Some of the comments on this video baffle me, by the way. People say that "this isn't a good mashup"...I mean, REALLY? If you don't like the mashup, fine, that's your prerogative. But it's a PERFECT mashup, perfect to the point that, again, I'm annoyed that I didn't want it sooner. You may not like Fred Durst (which is totally understandable), but this is a very well-made mashup. |
|
| CAWWWWWW!
This probably should not be on this list, but screw it, it impacted me much more in 2015 than it did last year. This is, simply put, why I love YouTube, because videos like these are possible. Some of my favorite memes of 2015 came from this video. "DOOOO!" "ON THE FLOOR!" "SUN-DAE!" I quote this video way too much, and it really hit home in 2015 just how impacting the Brock Lesnar Voice Crack remix truly was. I really wish this also broke out alongside the John Cena prank call in 2015, because it deserves it. |
|
| Why You Always Lying?
Oh boy, where do I begin with this one? I'm not really all that susceptible to Vine videos or Instagram videos or other social media videos, really, but there are times where these videos find a way to transcend their platform to become something special. "Why You Always Lying" is one of those times. And it's not even really because of what made it such a viral hit, honestly. The hook is definitely enjoyable, but what really gets me every time is the use of Next's "Too Close" as the backdrop. Few things make me more nostalgic for the 90's than "Too Close". Where I grew up (Cincinnati), the song was just all over the place on the radio. It was inescapable. This video reminded me of how catchy and how much of an earworm that song was. Oh, and "mmmohmygod" never fails to make me chuckle. |
|
| Wrestling Isn't Wrestling
I know that you're trying to do movies now, Max Landis, but you really should stop, because you're never going to top Wrestling Isn't Wrestling. It just is not going to happen. Over the 20+ minute running time, Landis fills in so many in-jokes and references that it's almost impossible to keep up, all while playing the silliness up to infinity and providing some truly special wrestling memes. Special mention has to go to Landis' depiction of John Cena, which is the funniest Cena-related parody I've come across in quite some time, even funnier than the John Cena prank call. As the great literary genius Homer Simpson once said, it's funny because it's true. You can say that about pretty much this entire video, really. And when all else fails, GET THE BRICKS!! |
|
| ROMAN. REIGNS.
Honestly, 2015 was not my favorite year for YouTube videos. I got my fair share of enjoyment out of the top ten this year, but, as a whole, I've enjoyed past years more than I enjoyed the 2015 YouTube slate. Having said that, 2015 was an incredible year for wrestling-related YouTube videos. As WWE finds itself in a creative lull and the state of wrestling looks bleaker than ever, YouTube stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam with its wrestling content. More than any other year, 2015 was dominated by the sheer amount of quality wrestling videos posted on YouTube. And nothing entertained me more on YouTube this year than a wrestling video with made up lyrics for an instrumental theme song. Those made up lyrics was created for the new pet project of WWE, the guy handpicked to be their future top star, Roman Reigns. To say that wrestling fans are not happy with this decision would be putting it mildly, and WWE themselves are not helping with terrible decisions and writing. In an effort to show off just how much WWE was pushing Reigns to the moon, a video was created to give Reigns lyrics for his instrumental theme song to really, REALLY "make Roman Reigns look strong"...and they are spectacular. Not only are they hilarious, but if Reigns actually used this version of his theme song, he might actually become popular with the wrestling fans that WWE has alienated! I mean, would a good-hearted wrestling fan REALLY boo a guy with a theme song this awesome? I think NOT.
Special shoutout to another "theme song" this channel has uploaded for a guy that wrestling fans actually DO like: Seth Rollins. "HALF BLONDE. HALF BRUNETTE. WHAT. COLOR. IS YOUR HAIR?!" Beautiful. |
|
First list is already done and dusted. I told you that I was prepared. If you've looked at my schedule, you'll see that the next list is the (now annual) Songs from the Past top 15. I'm really excited about this particular top 15, because there's some really good stuff that I discovered or rediscovered in 2015. Chances are that it will be posted on schedule tomorrow, but I may move it up to later tonight. Regardless, I'll see you then.

Everytime you post a YECD, I picture a 40-year-old man trying to finish a marathon. An 40-year-old man who's spent most of his time partying and eating rather than training. That man is the YECA and the finish line is well, kind of self explanatory there, huh?
Hopefully, that man has trained a lot this year and is ready to finish this craze that's called YECA. Otherwise, I'll call the True Geordie to wake him up.
