A mess, especially if true It would mean the current info is all a coverup and the shooting was an inside job.

While I can see people getting races and sizes/builds wrong, I think it would be hard to miscount the number of shooters with so few of them. Even if the 2 current suspects actually did it, it seems like there's still a third shooter somewhere

I read a few days ago that many shootings initially have an incorrect shooter count reported by the eyewitnesses because of the echo of the gun or how different guns can sound differently.

I always wondered this. Initial reports had vastly different details then the two that ended up arrested for this. When it first happened, several of the witnesses reported three men in colored t-shirts and jeans. And it went all the way from that to two people, one being 90lbs, covered in military garb.
