I swear everytime an artist has a flop era, some stan bases get that ''BUT IT WAS ACCLAIMED'' excuse.

Depends, for a mainstream act it's a terrible excuse. But for a smaller artist with no big fanbase or GP support it's not really an excuse either but maybe that's what the artist was looking for.

Yeah. It pretty much depends on the project. Some acts aim for the acclaim instead of commercial success. You wouldn't hear Bjork or FKA Twigs slay the radio, their aim is to express themselves artistically.

Avril Lavigne was acclaimed, it's only Hello Kitty (and for her albums Goodbye Lullaby) that got backlash.

Yeah but when you release a pop radio track, then it flops, than you got everyone screaming at the grammys and metacritic scores seems like stupid to me. Especially when they got like one grammy nomination.

IMO those are irrelevant to pop/mainstream acts. I would understand that about and indie project/artist tho.

Acclaim and success are both important.

Iʻd much rather my fave release a GOOD project (which are generally acclaimed) than a ****** successful one.

I agree with he first part, but there a few eras here and there won't get panned.

EMOTION and 4 for example, one was a flop and another one a huge underperformance, you got stans yelling that it was acclaimed, when the public just didn't have enough interest in the albums.

And the sales climate excuse is more reasonable than saying that an artist didn't have success because it was targeting an indie audience

Not really. A lot of artist thrive from acclaim from music outlets as well as their peers. It also helps create for them a really reliable core fan base that can keep their career alive enough for them to make more records.

It's actually easier to ruin your career after a massive era when the next one is just not selling as well and those types of artist generally have very fickle fan bases. It's happened to many past mainstream acts: Paula Abdul for one.
