Mariah's vocal condition really is a problem isn't it? She's holding on well enough but she really can't keep doing the songs she made in 1991 when she was untouchable. And there's no better time than now, after pulling off the musical triumph that was MIAM. She said all she needed to say and remained true to herself and now instead of trying and most likely failing to top it she could venture into something new.
