Why are people proud of nationality, sexuality, skin colour?
See this is something I don't understand. People who claim to be proud of their nationality, sexuality, skin colour etc. What is there to be proud of? Surely it's just a fact of life not some sort of achievement?
I've seen people be like "I'm proud to be American", "I'm proud to be gay", "I'm proud to be black" and I don't understand. You didn't choose any of these things, you didn't work hard at them, they just are. Surely people are proud of things they've strived to achieve not something they had no control over?
It's an answer to discrimination in any way against any of the things you listed, in my opinion.
If you're discriminated against for your nationality, race or sexuality, being proud about it makes perfect sense.
LGBTs and ethnic minorities have historically been oppressed and told they are lower than other just for being born gay or belonging to their ethnic group. The pride is a response to that.
It means "I know you want me to feel ashamed of it and hate myself for it, but I don't", it's amazing imo because it always seems to make the straights/whites PRESSED. I live for iT
PS: Stop trying to make that gif happen, it's not going to happen
Being proud of being gay, black, etc. means you're not ashamed to be a part of a group that experiences discrimination/prejudice.
But why do you need to be proud of it? Surely you can just accept it. That can also mean you're not ashamed to be part of a group. You don't need to be proud of something to not be ashamed of it. You can just be neutral and accept it for what it is

I always say that I don't really care about my nationality because I didn't choose to be born there and people always look at me with anger. I don't get it.
