I was watching the 60 minutes on the Sydney Siege and what exactly happened during the hostage crisis and cannot imagine being in that situation. If you were held hostage, what would be your gameplan? In the Sydney Siege, the people who escaped earlier in the afternoon almost caused the other hostages to die. I don't think I would risk anyone else's lives, I would probably stay until the end or when a large group of hostages would be able to leave (like what happened when those people escaped at night).
But if you stay too long, you might be executed when the police comes in and seizes your location.
I JUST started a new job at a security company. I'm just the HR director but when I go out to lunch with all the armed agents this plays through my mind.
Like what if someone sees my badge with "lieutenant" on it and thinks I'm police or some ****? Would I have to like, act?
You know, I think a lot of us - myself included - would like to think we'd be the brave one, or the smart one - the one who challenges the attacker or somehow helps the situation.
In reality, I think my response would be to play dead if possible, to comply to an attacker's demands otherwise, and in general to just preserve my life and the life of those around me through inaction. It's not something I've experienced before, so I think the fear drive would sort of take over.
I'd like to think I'd be a hero but in all honesty I'd probably try to remain as quiet and still as possible to avoid bringing attention to myself and then start sobbing uncontrollably
