great lyrics, cohesive sound, credibility for his image, not a big celebrity figure, iconic, etc.

I was wondering about the music itself. I'm currently trying to listen to his music (and hip hop/rap in general)

He's very poetic & great at storytelling. He also touched on a lot of complex political & social issues that are very relevant today. Specifically, TPAB is about race relations in the US, most notably on The Blacker the Berry, Alright & King Kunta.

Great production, stellar socially conscious lyrics, a myriad of excellent flows (to the point of wtf), very real guy.

And just generally great music. Start with Good Kid Maad City, go back to Section 80 and then try To Pimp A Butterfly.

Basically.

Great music. But at times it does feel that he is very over-praised especially since he's doing nothing new but kudos to him on making it big without music singing about how much money he got in the bank and he's "bitches" like most urban male artists nowadays.

I see. This is why lots of hip hop/rap is acclaimed, I think, right? I'm just missing melodies in these genres, they have lots of beats though

He's amazing. His lyrics/concepts are so complex and a perfect representation of where he's from and the ideas he's trying to get across through his music. Not to mention stellar production and not hopping on trends in hip hop just to get hits.

He's a true visionary artist who has above-average rap talent & can appeal to both mainstream & strong fanbase audiences.

He is so overrated, I don't get it.

Because he's a ****ing god. I bet most of you haven't even listened to his work

That's because hip-hop isn't based on melodies, but rhythm instead. That's why a good flow is so important.
