I actually saw Kendrick live a few years ago and really liked him, so listening to this album is long overdue!
Wesley's Theory: An interesting album opener. I expected this album to deal entirely with themes of blackness and empowerment and while that is somewhat present here, it's not readily apparent. Regardless, still a great track.
For Free?: The girl's commentary is pretty funny, and the juxtaposition of 50s sonic cheer and a later form of music in rap being put together seems to make a statement in itself. While the "this dick ain't free" refrain gets largely annoying, this track is packed with messages of sexuality and slavery.
King Kunta: The 3 note production hook is so simple and effective, and in combination with the rest of the production choices, the song sounds expertly crafted. He sets up a nice stride while perfectly gliding over his beat. The oxymoron he's using is brilliant and powerful: he's slave and king, a wealthy black man in America. A standout track already.
Note: I'm having to listening to each song a few times and read the lyrics to fully grasp everything, this is legitimately my first time going through a true rap album before and trying to review it, so it's hard
