Grey's Anatomy wasn't demolished at all. Scandal was down but still a hit too.
In fact last season they both did better in the fall, against Football, than in the spring when there wasn't football.

You could say "but they don't have the same audience."
But do you think The Wiz Live! has the same audience as football? Cuz I don't.

And really, the CBS broadcast of football last night was in the 3s, just like The Wiz...

Black excellence

Scandal and Grey's have established audiences over YEARS that will frankly always choose it over football. Not comparable to a one-time telecast.

And there's really no distinction between the "type of audience" when it comes to football. Basically every demographic watches football, even moreso when a nationally popular team like the Packers is playing.

Also, you apparently missed the final ratings, where NFL Football adjusted up to a 5.3. There's no question The Wiz would've soared higher without that kind of competition.

Thursday Night Football didn't move to broadcast TV until last year, and the game orders for CBS last year were shorter (the CBS Thursday Night games ended in November last year). It was actually pretty intelligent of NBC to schedule The Wiz against football, though. No way any of their original programming would've done well competing with Packers/Lions. Their only goal was to have something competitive in that time slot and they achieved that, though I definitely would've liked to see how ratings would've looked with football.

It's pretty funny though, NBC had to choose between airing this on Wednesday and Thursday because of The Voice on Monday and Tuesday. They decided they'd rather go against football than Empire.
