Woman of the Year is really quite simple as the first word is woman. I'm not surprised, after looking at the threads to all of the recipients (from Ciara in 2006 to Gaga in 2015), that people can't accept a woman being praised like this. At first I thought it was tit for tat squabbling, but it's clearly some misogynistic issues that these guys have with women in general. Which doesn't surprise me with the lack of respect women receive on this forum. All the WOTY threads look the same.
All of them were awarded for not only the success they achieved on the Billboard charts, but the work they have done behind the scenes also. Ciara as an African American, multiple R&B hits, crunk, electropop, against the overflowing white-pop; Beyoncé and her all-female band, plus charity work; Fergie as the leading female of BEP and highly successful career with debut solo album; Pink and success as a female that refused to conform to the norm, since the early days of Brit/Xtina.
The only woman that could have been rightfully named as Woman of the Year would have been Taylor, and that would have been on the basis of success, once again, for the third year. Gaga's career has been very successful and she's been awarded numerous titles throughout her career and commended for her work outside of music. This, along with the great year she has had, especially after the previous two, is more than enough reasons as to why she is more than deserving. But for some strange reason, the members of atrl can't praise a woman for her successes and concentrate on the 'of the year' part of the title, which actually, using the other recipients as examples, proves that it means far much more than that.
You're welcome. I hope that's the explanation and OP you were looking for!
