Reminds me a couple of things that Shakira said over 10 years ago...
Quote:
"I don’t like labels, because I’m an artist on a permanent search. If there is any label I like, it is the ‘pop’ label, because it’s a very flexible world. I’m afraid of getting married to one sound forever. I want to have Don Juan’s liberty within music, and do what my instincts tell me.”

Quote:
"There is something about the pop world, the pop god, is very permisive, very flexible."

Quote:
"I always fantasized about being a rock star more than a pop star, but rock 'n' roll is a little harder on yourself, more rigid. Mick Jagger will never be able to put away his tight trousers. Pop always gives you the opportunity to metamorphose. But there is some kind of dignity in the world of rock 'n' roll that you can't find in pop music. So I like to walk right in the middle and jump back and forth."

I agree with both of them - pop music does allow you the flexibility does other genres don't - and it also allows you to shift the needle of the 'pop' sound at the moment. It is important to know, as they both do, that they hold the power to shift pop music toward a sound with more depth & texture.
