That is kind of true, but I kind of have to disagree with you at the same time. Rita failed to use fashion as a tool to promote her music or build a solid fanbase. In Zendaya's case, I consider all of this a really smart marketing move. Think about it - she is building a solid platform for her album to drop while using these other tools, such as fashion. She could be big if she does everything in a right way, and so far her marketing plan is excellent.

She hasn't alienated her Disney fanbase yet, she got grown people (especially the black community) on her side when she defended dreadlocks, she has gained a lot of followers thanks to amazing selfies on Instagram and amazing outfits on red carpets - she's been slowly building a loyal fanbase over these past few years using these various tools, which is really genius.
