We came into Round 6 with a Top 14, and now we're doing the same with Round 7. So much has happened in the past two weeks! But now's the time to get back on track and get your heads back in the game...
CHALLENGE #7
THE SKILLS CHALLENGE
I wanted to make this challenge reasonably simple and I feel that this is a good transition challenge between the first half of the game and the second half that we're now in.
This is essentially the "Free Zone" challenge from last season, with a bit of a twist. Your challenge this week is to apply some of the songwriting skills you've used over the first six challenges to your entry in order to really show how far you've come. They may have all seemed random at the time, but each of the past challenges has tested a unique and important writing technique:
Round 1 – Experimenting with structure
Round 2 – Making every word count
Round 3 – Sourcing inspiration from a title
Round 4 – Conveying feelings through song
Round 5 – Sourcing inspiration from a concept, experimenting with language
Round 6 – Creatively handling a serious subject
You can use as many or as little of these techniques in your song this week as you wish, but us judges will be looking to see if we can see you incorporating these skills into your writing. Don't just cram as many as possible into your song. Do what feels right. Go outside of your comfort zone if you can, or think about what you excelled at in the past and try to use that to your advantage. Do whatever works for you.
Don't include a list of what techniques you've applied, we'll use our own judgement when it comes to that. If you've used a skill properly it should come through without explanation.
Well seeing the challenge, I'm glad I've got immunity.
This challenge is simple, but it's not necessarily easy. No themes and no restrictions can sometimes be freeing or it can be overwhelming. You can write about anything you want, so make it good.
06. RihsusChrist(ATG) – The Mountain You're probably not even going to read my comments but whatever. I didn't think it was necessarily bad, it just doesn't seem like the type of song that's about a "comeback" - it's more "determination" or "ambition" to me. Some lines I felt were oddly-phrased, "...my soul can turn white as snow" being the main one for me.
Surprise, bitch!
At least I'd like to think I made you a better judge...from now on you just won't "assume" things.
