Overall: I've never listened to a Christina Perri album before, even though I've generally liked what she's done, but I felt that this fell just short of my expectations. It was filled with mostly mediocre songs, mostly striving for "good." Lyrically she can nail it, while other times she tries and fails to write something profound and settles for relatively teenage, melodramatic works. This album just felt like a lot of reaching and not enough grasping.

Thanks. I know it's pretty simple but it's just for the bubbling under songs at this stage. I'm not sure about the rest but it might follow a similar theme!

Who did those graphics? And how are you determining your best of list? I'd like to do one, but my Last FM just kicked off in late June

HORRIBLE REVIEWS
How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful - Florence + the Machine
1. Ship to Wreck
It took a while for this song to grow on me. It's such a sudden begnning to the album, almost harsh but I do enjoy it a lot. The instrumental slays (although I wish there was a build up since it's the opening track). The only part that doesn't sit well with me is the elongated "to wreck". Other than than, a rather solid track that I can relate to and get crazy with.
8.4/10
2. What Kind of Man
This was an instant song for me. I'm so glad it was the lead, it did justice to the album. It sounds almost like gospel mixed with rock. I can relate to the subject and I get very angry with her. The way the guitar is introduced after the very spacey opening is amazing. This is Florence at the top of her game
10/10
3. How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
This one is very catchy. However I don't really know what it means, lyrically. "And every city was a gift and every skyline was like a kiss upon the lips... and meanwhile man was falling from space... between a crucifix and the Hollywood sign we decided to get hurt" are all much too lyrically complex for me to understand I don't feel much emotional connection but the music saves it a lot. The horn section is incredible

I made them. My list is primarily based on last.fm plays, but personal preference also comes into it as there were a lot of ties. Last year I also factored in my YTT but I stopped doing that so it's mostly just plays this year.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful - Florence + the Machine
4. Queen of Peace
IF I had to criticize anything about this song, it would be that it should last forever. This is that expected but still slayful Florence perfection. The lyrics, the music, the emotion, the whole product in general is too holy for this world. I feel the ache when I sing this song in the shower. It even has a better horn section than the title track, which I thought was gonna be the only time she used horns in the album (thankfully I was wrong). It was my initial favorite and still is. The Spanish vibe >>>>> . It's in her overall top 5 tracks. "And my love is no good against the fortress that it made of you / blood is running deep / sorrow that you keep" is one of my favorite lyrics ever, It's an epic tale.
10/10
5. Various Storms & Saints
If Queen of Peace was the epic, war-like song, this one is the calm after the storm. Although on first listen, I slept on it, the "people just untie themselves / uncurling lifelines / if you could just forgive yourself" part got stuck in my head and I knew it was special. The more I played it, the more I appreciated it. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and that is not an exaggeration.
10/10
6. Delilah
Florence knows how to deliver the epitome of quality bops.I can dance to this song like no other. It's very reminscent of Ceremonials and that album is a treasure. The drums are everything here (and I love when they change to sound more heavy and demanding and switch back to the regular drumbeat). I love the chanting that takes place here as well. She has such a godly voice. However, it's not one of the strongest.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful - Florence + the Machine
7. Long and Lost
Another soothing moment to catch your breath from moving too much. It was very unusual for Florence to strip back, musically, in her previous albums but here she masters the art of doing so as if she has done it all her life. It's so subtle and beautiful. Her voice is almost whispering here "I'll be.... so long and lost.." I love the melody of the chours, especially when she says "is it too late to come on home...?" Another strong track on such a strong album.
8.7/10
8. Caught
After the almost fatal 1234567 punch, Florence shows mercy and gives us an average song. The lyrics are kinda forced rhymes tbh and it's not as enjoyable musically either. However the "ooh oh oh oohs" do get ingrained in my brain from time to time. This is average by her standards, for anyone else, it'd be their best.
7/10
9. Third Eye
Firework who? Born This Way what? This is the inspirational song of the decade. I want to sing this live with her. Destroy my vocal chords goddess of love! It's really touching and she doesn't really touch self empowerment too much usually so it's VERY refreshing and uplifting and it makes me so happy. However it's not a vapid empowerment anthem. When she sings "I am the same, I'm trying to change" I feel the emotion and the honesty. Only she can make lines such as "and you deserve to be loved and you deserve what you are given" believeable for me, to be honest. "Ooh oh ooh oh, that original lifeline!" Slay me queen.

How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful - Florence + the Machine
10. St. Jude
This one gets praised a lot and I see why. It's hauntingly beautiful. However it doesn't deserve to be called the best as many have thought called it. Sometimes the lyrics are too simple "St. Jude / The patron saint of lost causes" but sometimes "I've always been more comfortable in chaos" they are really nice and relatable. Overall I love the stripped vibe but it's no Various Storms & Saints or Long and Lost. Still incredble.
8.3/10
11. Mother
My impacT!11 Kidding aside, this is one of the more experimental songs Florence has done. Although I don't like the overused "bird of prey" lyric, she makes it manageable and the song has way better moments so I overlook it. The chous is definitely one I'd love to sing while intoxicated. Mothaaaa! The distored bass towards the end is very Radiohead, I enjoy it a lot. It's a strong track, but once again, not a favorite. I recognize its genius, though.
8.9/10
12. Hiding
Everything from the catchy instrumental to the vocal delivery in "you cry a little and so do I, so do I" slays me. It's defintiely one of the most simple songs Florence has ever written but she brings out the best in the lyrics. The melody is sooooo infectious and it's vulnerable and relatable. After two albums where she felt enigmatic, it's nice to see this side of her. She was... hiding I guess

13. Make Up Your Mind
This song is a very cute bonus track. It almost sounds like a demo towards the begining, yet it builds nicely. I don't really like the begning, though, it's too basic and boring. They are a hard ten seconds to get over but after that it's killer. The chorus is frustrated and pleading, I love it. It's also strong and while she seems to be begging she also seems to be tired of his (or her ) sh!t (cause ha lovah is a d!cK). Again, simplistic a la Hiding but oh so effective. "While saving your own neck, I've been breaking mine for you" is so spot on.
8/10
14. Which Witch (Demo)
Ironically, it sounds less like a demo than Make Up Your Mind. I slept on it a few times but it has grown on me. Sorry ceremonials, but it still isn't near the best. The melody in some parts is not as effective however I do love when she says "Who's the heretic now..." (also @ ceremonials here ) It's vocally interesting and sounds very much like you would expect it to with that title, very witch-like. The chanting sounds like she's summoning a demon but in a good way. Random way to end the album but it's still an awesome song. Very Ceremonials like again, but not to the level of, say, Delilah.
8/10
How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful
What can I say? There's a reason I stan for such a perfect lady. She is so meticulous about her work and it shows. She delivers constant quality and there isn't really any filler, if anything Caught might be but it's still good. She opens up more than ever before and it really gives way to a more personable experience. I connect to a lot of the songs lyrically and those that I don't connect with, I still find musically pleasing. Speaking of music, this album has such a unique sound. It's rock but with a horn section and still has that magical quality that Florence's music is known for having. The harp, of course, is still present in some songs She feels more vulnerable than ever, yet stronger than ever. It is definitely my favorite 2015 release and it might just be my favorite Florence + the Machine album Please give it more than one listen. It took me a while to get into it, mostly because I didn't buy it right away (bad stan) but you will NOT regret it! This album was made in heaven.
