Wait so, if this is true does that mean from now on, singles theoretically chart a little lower the week the album debuts? the cma thing confuses me a little..

Before streaming was big on the Hot 100 they used to fall on album release week (well, with big albums like Taylor Swift, Britney Spears or Justin Bieber).

It would be different now though. Even if the sales fall the same songs will also get big streaming boosts on album release week, so it might even out somewhat.

If this is indeed what has happened, it'll be interesting to see what happens with Hello next week. Its airplay and streaming alone could probably keep it at #1 with 0 sales, but what if it gets "negative" sales? Adele's album sales are so high it's possible, but also a lot of her sales come from physicals, where nobody needs to worry about this, but I'm sure the album has gotten a huge amount of downloads too.

Reading through the last page of this thread and performing some quick calculations, I also agree that Billboard must have changed its rule regarding CMA sales.

I think it is safe to say that they don't count anymore for the Hot 100.

If you buy the song and then complete the album in the same week then it counts as a single sale in my estimates but Billboard ignores it completely (so it's also not CMA). The CMA effect is only there if the single sale was in a different tracking week than the album completion.
