Thanksgiving is a nationalist holiday defined by the rituals of making money and self indulgence. Nationalist traditions advance the idea of the freedom to be happy by erasing the consequences of imperial capitalism. Thanksgiving erases the genocide, sexual violence, land fraud and hate that defined early colonial histories and that continue to define US-Native relations. It distorts into a magically happy scene of an extended family dinner, including the "racial other," a relationship that was and is actually based on slavery, poverty, war and rape. And it shames and belittles Native people who contest and contend the representations as wannabe politically correct, overly sensitive, "not enough's" trying to grab onto the public spotlight for themselves.


I could go on... So why is the Erasing and Genocide of Native's a celebration and A 'Public holiday'?

I celebrate Thanksgiving but not columbus day.

Thanksgiving is to celebrate the arrival of the pilgrims and the welcoming they received from the Indians. The Indians shared with the pilgrims an abundance of their food and are celebrated for their kindness to the pilgrims. We teach children that Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and being grateful for what you have but we also teach them the kindness and selflessness of the Indians and encourage them to have that same kindness and selflessness.

In school we also acknowledge the wrong doings to the Native Americans during this time period and the US continues to give the Native Americans added benefits to show that we still acknowledge the wrong doings of our ancestors. We don't hide the genocide of the Indians and we certainly don't celebrate it.

It's sad how these ideas and traditions are misconstrued outside of America, you have the right to comment and question the traditions of another country but you should at least attempt to educate yourself on the basis of these traditions before doing so.

You do know what they taught us in history books is like a G-rated Disney borderline fictional fairy tale, right? There was never a "feast" where the Native Americans and Pilgrims all sat around a table and shared their hunted meats and freshly harvested crops and all held hands and sang Kumbaya... The pilgrims pretty much just invaded the Native's territory, they were inviting and taught them useful skills and once the immigrants learned and got the resources they needed they mercilessly murdered all the tribes and took their land

! Like most people don't even think about the real meaning of it, or how it actually started. We just get a nice turkey, have our family over and appreciate everyone and everything around us (while also transitioning into Christmas prep mode.)

To be honest the backlash against Thanksgiving to seemingly be summarized as "People aren't allowed to like, what I don't like"
