Student nurses will have their tuition fee grants axed and replaced with loans, George Osborne has revealed in this year’s autumn spending review.
Mr Osborne announced student nurses will stop receiving bursaries in order to free up around £800 million a year in government spending.
The Chancellor said: “Today there is a cap on student nurses; over half of all applicants are turned away, and it leaves hospitals relying on agencies and overseas staff.
“So we’ll replace direct funding with loans for new students – so we can abolish this self-defeating cap and create up to 10,000 new training places in this Parliament.”

This is so stupid.
1) Most student nurses aren't able to get part time jobs because of the requirements of the course, especially once placement begins.
2) There is already a nursing shortage in England and they pay £1.9 billion a year for agency staff. This cut will put off a LOT of applicants. I'm studying nursing right now and I know that I wouldn't have bothered to apply in the first place if I had to take out a loan. Nurses don't get paid well so why would they want to get into a lot of debt when the pay off isn't good at all? This will increase the nursing shortage and so even more will have to be paid out to agency staff.
3) The average age of a nursing applicant is 29. Many of them already have previous degrees meaning that they already are in debt of £27,000 or more. Financially, these post-graduate applicants won't be able to pay off their loans once all is said and done.
4) Nursing students deserve their bursary. We have to work over 700 unpaid working hours every year as part of the requirements. Having to work on the side of this and giving us the financial burden could put patient lives at risk.
