Review I just posted on my blog
Lo Stadio Tour DVD review
Finally Tiziano has blessed us with another live release. I already
reviewed the tour itself a few months ago, so in this review I will focus more on the editing of the DVD, how it compares to the
Alla mia età DVD, and aspects of the tour that you don't really notice when you're there.
I
complained about the packaging a few weeks ago, and while I'm still not fond of that red stripe and the back cover, in real life it looks nice enough. It's a beautiful little box, the four CDs and DVD are each in a separate sleeve and the booklet contains a lot of great photos from the tour, along with a few backstage ones. His manager calls it
a nice product and I can't help but agree.
San Siro
San Siro stadium is legendary, an impressive structure that makes you feel surrounded by "walls" of spectators. It still looks epic here, but there are two things that hold it back a little, especially compared to some other tour DVDs I've seen that were recorded at San Siro. The first is that the stadium was not completely sold out, the result of adding another date. Of course there are tons of people, but you can't help but notice those half empty sections all the way at the top on each side. It ruins the view. I also had an issue with how the audience itself was illuminated. Most of the time they don't really feel like a part of the colorful spectacle on stage. So the shots of the audience are surprisingly boring most of the time. There are other reasons for that too, which I'll get to in a bit.
The audio
I was a little worried when Tiziano said that they didn't correct any of the vocals for the DVD, but there was no need. He sounds amazing throughout. Maybe some notes are a little off, but it makes it more "real", like you're actually there. Almost every song is now the best live version that we have of it. The only exceptions for me are "Sere nere", which is a bit too much of a struggle here (but still great), and "E fuori è buio", which is just too good on the previous DVD. I'm also partial to "Indietro" on the Italia Loves Emilia DVD. Another disappointment which I already talked about is his new way of singing "L'amore è una cosa semplice". I'm sorry Tiz, but the melismatic switch to falsetto on "tu sei il mio cielo" sounds awful, and you need to stop doing that. He's actually mangling the flawless melody of the song even more on the latest tour! But let me not go off on a tangent...
My biggest issue with the audio is actually the audience participation. Anyone familiar with his live performances knows that there are fixed moments in many songs that he leaves up to the people. But here, most of the time you can barely hear them! They did too good of a job filtering out the audience noise. This adds to the coldness and lack of epicness that I already mentioned. I don't mind it on the CDs, but when you watch the DVD I like to hear them when it's appropriate. Make us
feel the presence of those 50,000 people. Also, when he flies above the crowd during "Non me lo so spiegare", the screams sort of fade in an out, it sounds a little weird.
What's most important though is that he sounds great and the band is great. So my biggest issue is a minor one.
The editing
I think the easiest way to sum up the editing of the DVD is sparse and simple. Nothing fancy to make scenes seem like more than they are. No dizzying perspectives, no slow motion, nothing frantic. You're enjoying the concert as is, and I think it was the right decision to edit it this way, as the show itself is more than enough.
The biggest problem is that the audience is shown too much, especially shots of the whole crowd. It gets boring after a while, especially during the slower songs (and we know he has tons of those). Many times there are also close-ups of people who are just standing there listening, barely singing along. You can't tell me that these are the best shots they could get. This is when the editing stops being sparse and simple and leans more towards lazy.
The shots also don't do the scenography much justice. There should've been more shots of the full stage and the awesome buildings/screens. Most of the time it's too far zoomed out. A DVD should make you feel like you're there front row, not in the cheap seats. It's nice that they put a camera all the way at the top, but the shot panning from the parking lot to the stage really didn't need to be in there ten times. We want to see Tiziano!
Two specific moments I want to comment on are the opening, which we know was botched on the first night. He was launched in the air and got stuck hanging there. But to fix it, rather than show the full thing from the second night (or even any other night), they switch to a shot of the audience right after he's launched up, and you don't see him until he's back down. It might as well not have happened. Another disappointment was "L'Olimpiade", the song with the most choreography. We know he's not the greatest dancer, but still, it's amusing. Instead we get to see most of it from very far away, more shots of the audience, etc. Very frustrating.
Conclusion
I only watched the DVD twice before writing this review, so perhaps I'll change my mind about some of my criticisms with repeated viewings, but this is what stuck out to me so far. Make no mistake though, even though I sound a little negative, this is still by far my favorite concert I've been to and it's easily my favorite concert DVD as well. If you like him even a little bit, you need to watch this and I'm sure you'll end up loving him a lot more.
I just don't think that it does justice to the immense love that Italians have for him and the depth of emotion they feel when they're attending his concerts. It felt a little too cold and distant, and it's definitely not the audience's fault, just the way they were filmed and the way their voices were muffled.
This was filmed by an amateur at the same concert, and the DVD makes that hard to believe.
In any case, we waited six years for this, and it was definitely worth the wait. It's kind of ridiculous that such an amazing live performer has hardly any official live releases. Hopefully we won't have to wait another six years for the next one.
