While more prevalent in the USA, is this racial classification method racist in itself? I mean if someone has one black parent and one white parent why is he regarded black? I find it weird that just because you have a drop of black blood you are now black as if you've been tarnished and not worthy of being called half white etc. Wouldn't it better to recognise them as their own race, for example Pardo in Brazil or Coloureds in South Africa?

It was a rule that basically said if you have any "black blood" in you then you're black.

The one drop rule goes back to the 19th century. You could be mixed with a lot of things but if you have slice of black in you and those features are apparent... You'll probably just be treated as a black person.

Yeah basically what I'm asking, kind of comes off as it being a declaration that if you have black in you, you shouldn't embrace your white side because you are no longer worthy

It dates back to slavery as a way of placing whites at the top of social hierarchy and blacks at the bottom of the social class, and under Jim Crow was a method of further stratisfiying society(such as barring blacks from voting, using the same facilites as whites (bathrooms, restaurants, pools, even up to baseball fields and buying circus tickets. Louisiana, for example, had anyone of "Negro" descent defined as having black ancestry of 1/32(or 3% Black ) as being black under law. Other states had laws ranging from 1/8 and 1/16 as well. So an ancestry marker that obviously was not even visible by that point of admixture dictated people's LIVES.

It becomes more of an appearance issue with that. As long as you can visibly pass as white, you'll just get treated like your blackness doesn't exist.
