Reality is some humans are scums and do the worse especially during times of war. We can't have all the nicest options in real life. In some parts of this world or a different era, your life depends on others' humanity and the choices you make.
People will choose their ways during the hardest times and for those people who chose to survive or were lucky to survive will live to tell his or her stories and the lives of those who died along the way.
Life is a proof of survival and death is an end to a struggle. It depends on what you think is more precious, survival or freedom. I probably want to stay alive but it all depends on your captor's humanity. There will always be ways to contribute even if your legs got shackled or you lower yourself to someone else.
