I wouldnt be surprised if alot people here didnt know about Stonewall and things important for LGBT culture, do you research about it, do you have knowlodge, do you care? Me, for one dont know much about gay culture in the us, especially bc im from Brazil but im fascinated to know about it, id love to read some books about it if anyone could recommend.

I really do not have enough knowledge as I should have. I am really interested in how gay life has changed. Being gay is part of my being. I basically don't know my past. It's like a missing link.

It gets worse that it is not that easy to exchange with other gays who are old now and talk about how gay life has looked like 50 or 60 years ago and what they know from friends and partners who were a part of the gay community even before them.
Many of them died of AIDS during the 80's and 90's.

- Start by reading the book Gay New York by George Chauncey
- Learn about Stonewall
- make your way through the disco era;
- study the harm caused by the AIDS pandemic in the 80s and early 90s;
- watch Paris is Burning; learn about Vogueing and the House of Xtravaganza
- become acquainted with the best of Chicago and NYC House Music;
- and then make your way through the 90s and the new millennium.

Oversimplified, but a starting point.

Straight culture is the mainstream culture.

not really. going to school and working and other hobbies keep me detached from most LGBT issues. although gay marriage was important to me.

Yes, I think it's important for any LGBT+ person to know the history of their community. I find the whole thing very fascinating, starting from all the gay/lesbian/bisexual etc. actors and actresses from the early 1900's up until now, especially seeing how far LGBT+ rights have come just in the last 20 years
