Nothing bad ever happens when I just pull out but I'm worried one day I'll lose my work

Depends. I've never lost any work by just pulling it out.

I don't think it's dangerous to the USB, but the internal drive of your computer itself. One of mine on my laptop stopped working. (I don't know if that's a direct correlation, but I assume that's why).

I never safely eject on my Desktop but my Macbook always gives me a warning after and makes me paranoid
