In some respects, Assad benefits from ISIS and a lot of ISIS oil goes through Syria with Syrian government knowledge.

Cutting off the oil sales would be the best place to start. That's how ISIS fund their operations.

The oil plants were under regimes/ Assads control before ISIS seized them, and Syrian army fought hard to keep them but ultimately lost and the consequences were that Assads army had not enough oil to keep their military actions against rebels and ISIS going. Russians are now providing Syrian army with oil, not ISIS.
