The Universal release is struggling badly in its limited U.S. launch after getting ravaged by critics. Projections show By the Sea coming in at $132,000 from 10 theaters for a dismal theater average of $13,200.
I checked just now; it says that she directed and wrote the script and starred in it. But what I'm wondering is, why was the film given a limited release?

Not really a bomb whatsoever. Only a handful of films had a better per-screen average last week and generally anything above a 10k per-screen average is nothing to cry about.
