But why does it matter? If YOU like a particular artist then YOU should like them because of the music they release NOT because of how well their song is doing on the Hot 100. Personally I stan for the music but a majority of my faves just so happen to be extremely successful.

Elosie, this couldn't be any further from the truth love. They're some artist who have produced their best work prior to finding success; and you don't have to be extremely successful to be iconic/legendary, Vanilla Ice sold more albums/records than Nas but Nas is clearly more legendary.
