News: South Carolina County Bans Middle East Refugees

Berkeley is the latest county in the Palmetto State to take on the Refugee Resettlement Project, a federal program for resettling refugees fleeing Middle East conflict and terror. (Pickens County passed a similar resolution in October; Greenville County’s council is considering doing the same, for instance.)

My family has lived in SC for a while and there's lots of nice people but unfortunately racism is well and alive, as well as other forms of bigotry like homophobia

They can miss me with this ****. These people probably haven't even met a Middle Eastern person on their lives yet they feel so entitled to say refugees would be a risk. That councilman saying he can't take a chance for his precious son to be attacked? There are way more chances a white man attacks him than a Middle Easterner in South Carolina

The US NEEDS to take refugees. They are part of the reason Syria is in the conditions it's in now, and Europe has taken so many already.

Who will be responsible for the financial upkeep of these families? Its not even about the fear of middle easterners. SC doesnt know how its foubg to support the new transplants. We have enough problems suppoting our own. I'm is SC and to be honest, I experienced more prejudice when I was up north and we won't even start with how segregated most northern cities are. SC is not as bad as people like to paint it.

I grew up in a northern city (Rock Hill) for 11 years and lord was it bad

I went to Winthrop so maybe I was cushioned from that and moved back to the upstate. It's not that bad in Greenville.

When I lived up north there was literally no white people in my class.

All the blacks sat together, the asians sat together and the Latinos.

I didn't realize how messed up that was until I left and moved down south.

I moved to Greenville SC about 6 years ago, and currently live in Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina. It isn't horrible here. But racism is alive and well in SC i can tell you that.

Along with Homophobia, but it isn't that bad.
